Hydrangeas & Irises
10/20/21
What I’m loving right now…
Hydrangeas! This season I have been captivated specifically by the Limelight Hydrangea – it is a show stopper! They seem to have popped up overnight everywhere I look and they are stunning. Huge, white panicale blooms – at some point they are green, thus the name, but I seem to notice them after they’ve turned white. I’ve decided to buy 3 and plant them this month at the top of my driveway.
What I’m not loving right now…
Dwarf Irises. Ugh. I do need to preface this with that I really do love these little guys. The previous owners planted a beautiful boarder of these around the driveway. And when they bloom in the spring, the effect is magical. Then after blooming, they stay green all through the intense Georgia heat with really no tending needed. Until they do need tending. I’m guessing they’ve been left to grow on their own for at least 5 years and they are now out of control. They have spread like crazy and have crowded themselves so much that most of them won’t bloom. The thought of trying to dig out literally hundreds of theses bulbs makes me want to cry! I’m tempted to take a shovel and just start hacking away – whatever survives, survives. Any iris experts out there??
