2022 Seed Shopping Spree!
I love this time of year! I remember last year, sitting in a cabin in North Georgia with my Johnny’s seed catalog, a sharpie, and a stack of post it notes marking and tagging my heart out. I was amazed to see all the different varieties of veggies! I think there were 10 pages dedicated to just tomatoes. Even funnier, I marked 6-7 types of tomatoes I wanted to plant … even though I don’t like tomatoes very much. But it was like I couldn’t help myself. Who wouldn’t want to grow these beautiful things?!
This year looks a tad different, I’m at home on my couch but the process is just the same. Johnny’s catalog, a sharpie, and a stack of post its. Although, this year, I went out to the garage to look at the seeds I have left from last season so I didn’t over buy. Hahahahaha
I still managed to have 29 packs of seeds in my online cart … I think I’m officially a seed addict.
Ok so here’s what I’m ordering to try in the spring:
I learned a lot last Spring – I think that will be a common theme. In the spring, I direct sowed all of my seeds. As a result, the majority never turned into anything edible. I ended up buying plugs from the store to replace most of my seeds. I think it just gets too hot too fast for seeds to have much of a chance here (7b). So, in the Fall, I experimented with indoor seed starting and the result was the literal opposite. Nearly every single seed I started turned into a viable transplant and produced magnificently. I am still harvesting swiss chard, kale, broccoli, kohlrabi, collards, mustard greens, radishes, and arugula … waiting for the brussels sprouts and cabbage to be ready but they are looking great.
Starting tomatoes and herbs from seed will be new for me this year! After a little more research, I’ll begin indoor seed starting in the next few weeks.
